Elisabet's Will

In the haunting forests and shimmering lakes of northern Minnesota, where Finnish immigrants once carved farms from wilderness and passed down the unyielding spirit of sisu—strength, determination, and endurance—Sandra Sperling sets her unforgettable family saga, Elisabet's Will. This cross-genre novel is more than a story; it is an emotional journey that blends mystery, suspense, drama, and a touch of romance, while finding light in humor even amid darkness.

At its heart lies Lisbet, a woman burdened by years of rejection from her own kin. When she dares to confront Evelyn, her estranged uncle's wife, in hopes of uncovering why much of the family has shunned her since childhood, Lisbet opens a door to peril. Secrets buried for decades spill into the present, threatening not only her fragile peace but also the safety of her beloved five-year-old granddaughter, Greta. The tension builds toward an explosive climax that leaves readers breathless, asking how far family bonds can stretch before they shatter.

Critics and readers alike have praised the novel's immersive characters and authentic atmosphere. Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Proulx, author of The Shipping News, called it "the kind of work that deserves to be widely read," applauding Sperling's voice and storytelling power. Readers celebrate its realism, its sharp observations of fractured families, and its balance of humor with tragedy—qualities that make the narrative linger long after the final page.

Sandra Sperling herself is no stranger to reinvention. Born in Nevada, she began her creative life in Minnesota, where she wrote her first stories before turning to painting. However, writing called her back, and today she is the author of acclaimed novels such as CONTROL (a finalist for the National Indie Excellence Awards).

Sandra Sperling was born in Nevada and began her creative life in Minnesota, where, as a child, she wrote a play and a short story. Eventually she attempted a horror novel, but it didn't horrify. Her mother, while reading the manuscript, began to laugh helplessly and leaned against a door for support, sliding to the floor like a piece of cooked spaghetti. Deciding she was a failure as a writer, Sandy switched to painting drybrush watercolors. The pull to write, however, was too strong to resist, so while still in Minnesota, she again began to write, publishing some short stories and advancing to novels. She has two grown children in Minnesota and now lives in Kentucky with her husband. She enjoys taking nature walks, refinishing old furniture and reading.
