Control

Control by Sandra Sperling immerses readers in a richly layered narrative where suspense, romance, and satire converge. Set against the tranquil yet mysterious backdrop of rural Minnesota, the novel juxtaposes Sonny's journey of self-discovery and independence with a dangerous undercurrent of global-scale malfeasance. The story unfolds with Sonny, a young widow and watercolor artist, inheriting her late husband's farmhouse and wealth. Intent on rebuilding her life, she is unexpectedly drawn into the orbit of two intriguing neighbors—Clark, a rugged handyman with his own scars, and Rolf, a reclusive author. Amid her pursuit of art, life skills, and personal renovation, Sonny encounters strange happenings within her inherited home and secrets locked away in its eerie basement.

But beneath this pastoral life, Sperling spins a dark tale of a clandestine, powerful group—DR GEM. These billionaires, headquartered in an abandoned underground mine, are developing CONTROL, a malevolent virus designed to subjugate humanity. As Sonny and her new acquaintances uncover this secret, their lives, and perhaps the world, teeter on the edge of catastrophe.

Known for her breezy yet poignant style, Sandra Sperling brings a unique authenticity to her characters, echoing her own journey from her creative beginnings in Minnesota to her life in Kentucky. Sperling's talent for relatable, humorous, and complex storytelling shines as she balances the dark, thrilling elements of CONTROL with moments of lightness and wit. A master of suspense and character-driven drama, Sperling captivates with a story that dares readers to consider how easily the forces of good and evil can intertwine, all while delivering a satisfying and thought-provoking read.

Sandra Sperling was born in Nevada and began her creative life in Minnesota, where, as a child, she wrote a play and a short story. Eventually she attempted a horror novel, but it didn't horrify. Her mother, while reading the manuscript, began to laugh helplessly and leaned against a door for support, sliding to the floor like a piece of cooked spaghetti. Deciding she was a failure as a writer, Sandy switched to painting drybrush watercolors. The pull to write, however, was too strong to resist, so while still in Minnesota, she again began to write, publishing some short stories and advancing to novels. She has two grown children in Minnesota and now lives in Kentucky with her husband. She enjoys taking nature walks, refinishing old furniture and reading.
